The SASSA Child Support Grant targets families with lower incomes to provide financial assistance to parents in meeting their children’s basic needs. The SASSA Child Care Grant is a social grant provided by SASSA to the primary caregiver of a child under 18. The primary caregiver can be the child’s parent, or grandparent. Great news: caregivers can receive grants for up to 6 children, even if they aren’t biological or legal parents.

  • You must be a South African citizen, a recognized refugee, or hold permanent residency status.

  • The child must be under 18 years old.

  • From April 1, 2024, individuals should ensure that their annual income does not exceed R60,000 if they are single and R120,000 if they are married to meet the means test criteria.

What Documents Are Needed for SASSA Child Grant?

When applying for the children’s grant at the SASSA office, make sure to bring the required documents with you as the applicant.

  • Your original 13-digit bar-coded ID.
    • If you don’t have ID documents complete the affidavit form using the official SASSA template. Obtain the form from a SASSA official or download it from the provided link.
  • Baptismal certificate if you have it.
    • If you don’t have an ID or birth certificate. Ask someone you trust, like a community leader, social worker to sign a paper saying they know you and your child.
  • School certificate, if available.
  • RTHC, if you can provide it.

Caregiver Documents for SASSA Child Grant

 If you are not the child’s biological parent, you must show proof that you are the primary caregiver.

  • Letter from school principal with the child present.
  • A sworn statement from a law enforcement agency.
  • Authorization letter from the biological parent of a child.
  • Provide the court order granting you custody if you are divorced and have custody of the child.
  • If you have a job, show your most recent payslips or bank statements (past 3 months).
  • If you’re getting unemployment benefits, bring your UIF card.
  • If you receive a pension, bring your latest receipt.

The primary objective of a child support grant is to ensure that the child consistently attends school and completes their education. No attendance at school by the child will lead to the denial of the child support grant.

The SASSA child support grant can be applied for at your nearest SASSA office branch by completing the application form or by applying online by following the guidelines provided on the SASSA services website.

If you cannot visit the SASSA office due to age or illness, someone you trust can apply for you with the necessary documentation. The person applying should bring a letter from the individual and a doctor’s note explaining their inability to visit the SASSA office.

The grant may be suspended for the following causes:

How to Restore Your SASSA Grant?
